UV printing is a direct-to-object decoration method that uses ultraviolet light to instantly cure ink applied directly onto virtually any surface — wood, metal, glass, plastic, leather, ceramic, acrylic, and more. It produces vibrant, full-color, photographic-quality prints with a durable finish that resists scratching and fading. For Shopify merchants, UV printing is the most versatile decoration method for hard goods and specialty items, with profit margins commonly ranging from 60% to 85%.

The direct-to-object printing market is growing at over 22% annually as equipment costs decrease and print quality improves. A desktop UV printer suitable for ecommerce production starts at approximately $5,000, with production-grade flatbed printers ranging from $10,000 to $50,000+.

What Is UV Printing and How Does It Work?

UV printing uses inkjet technology to spray CMYK + white ink directly onto a product's surface. UV LED lamps mounted on the print carriage instantly cure (harden) the ink as it's deposited, bonding it to the substrate in milliseconds. The result is a vibrant, durable print that's dry and ready to handle immediately after printing — no drying time, no curing oven, no additional processing.

The white ink layer is critical. It prints first as a base on dark or transparent surfaces, providing opacity for the CMYK colors on top. On white or light surfaces, the white layer is optional. This dual-layer capability means UV printing works on virtually any color substrate — unlike sublimation (light colors only) or DTG (cotton only).

At Kodiak Decorated Products, we use UV printing for phone cases, awards, signage, and specialty items that can't go through our laser engraver or screen printing press. It fills the gap for full-color hard goods that sublimation can't reach (non-poly-coated surfaces) and that laser can't do (multi-color designs).

What Products Can I UV Print?

UV printing's versatility is its primary advantage. Products that work with UV printing include phone cases, wooden signs and plaques, acrylic awards and displays, glass and ceramic items, metal plates and tags, leather goods, rigid packaging, promotional products (pens, USB drives, power banks, coasters), tiles and home decor, and custom packaging.

The common thread: rigid or semi-rigid surfaces with a relatively flat area. UV printers can handle slight curves (bottle caps, rounded edges) but not cylindrical objects unless you have a rotary attachment. For cylinders like tumblers, UV printers with rotary adapters exist but laser engraving is typically more cost-effective for drinkware.

How Profitable Is UV Printing?

UV printing delivers some of the highest margins in custom product production because material costs are extremely low (ink consumption per print is measured in cents) and perceived value is high.

ProductBlank CostUV Print CostTotal COGSRetail PriceMargin
Custom phone case$2–$4$0.30–$0.50$2.50–$4.50$30–$4085–88%
Wooden photo plaque$3–$8$0.50–$1.00$3.50–$9.00$25–$4575–86%
Acrylic award$5–$12$0.50–$1.50$5.50–$13.50$35–$6579–84%
Ceramic coaster set (4)$4–$8$1.00–$2.00$5.00–$10.00$28–$4072–82%
Custom signage$8–$20$1.00–$3.00$9.00–$23.00$40–$8071–78%

Ink costs for UV printing average $0.01–$0.05 per square inch depending on coverage and white ink usage. A full-coverage 5"×7" print uses approximately $0.50–$1.00 in ink. This extremely low variable cost is what makes UV printing margins so attractive.

How Do I Set Up UV-Printed Products on Shopify?

Setting up UV-printed products follows the same workflow as other customizable products on Shopify:

  1. Install BrandLift Product Personalizer for real-time product customization with live preview
  2. Create product listings with high-quality photos of your UV-printed items (both blank and example customizations)
  3. Configure the customizer with accurate print area dimensions matching your UV printer's bed size and the product's printable surface
  4. Enable text and image customization — UV printing handles full-color artwork, so image uploads are a key feature
  5. Set production file export to PNG at 300 DPI with CMYK color mode — compatible with most UV printer RIP software

BrandLift generates print-ready files that load directly into your UV printer's software without reformatting. The file dimensions match the print area you configured, the resolution is production-grade, and customer designs are composited at the correct specifications.

For most Shopify merchants, UV printing and laser engraving are complementary — UV for full-color hard goods, laser for premium single-tone engraving. Many shops run both. Kodiak POD handles laser-engraved drinkware for merchants who don't own either.

Frequently Asked Questions

How durable is UV printing?

UV-cured ink bonds strongly to most surfaces and resists scratching, water, and UV fading. Adding a clear varnish layer (which most UV printers can apply in the same pass) increases durability significantly. UV prints typically last 2–5+ years under normal use conditions.

Can I UV print on curved surfaces?

Standard flatbed UV printers handle slight curves and irregular surfaces (up to ~1–2 inch height variation). For cylindrical objects, you need a UV printer with a rotary attachment. For deep curves or complex 3D shapes, UV printing becomes impractical.

What's the minimum order for UV printing?

One unit. UV printing has zero setup cost per design — it's as efficient printing 1 custom item as 100. This makes it ideal for the personalized products model where every item is unique.
